Movie Haiku:Well-intentioned attempt to tackle serious subject but still be commercially successful is rescued by Davis''s terrific performance as a Mississippi maid in 1963 who decides to tell her story to an ambitious young writer (Stone). All of Davis''s scenes benefit from her eloquent gravitas, but when she''s off screen, it''s mostly populated by caricatures.
