Movie Haiku:Woodward is a wonderful voice-over narrator, but Scorsese's decision to lay it on thick has the effect of turning all the characters into specimens under glass, outclassed by their luxurious surroundings. Academy members were right: in the large & prestigious cast, only Ryder seems to capture Edith Wharton's intention.
