Movie Haiku:Styne/Sondheim musical has some wonderful parts (the absolute pinnacle comes when the three veteran strippers teach young Gypsy Rose Lee the tricks of her new trade) but Russell just can’t hold the center as that epitome of stage mothers: Mamma Rose. “True” story maps the boom & bust of vaudeville.
