REFLECTIONS ON OSCAR 2011

JAN RANTS L

I suppose the letdown was inevitable...

After lobbying for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE in 2009 & THE HURT LOCKER in 2010, I just didn’t have the energy to fight for WINTER’S BONE knowing it really was lucky just to be nominated. But really, folks, really:

In a world filled with millions of people of every shape, size and color, in a world where approximately half the population is female, here they are: the six nominees for this year’s Best Director Oscar.

Now of course these six guys are all very different from one another, with different backgrounds, experiences, and sensibilities, and yet… Which of you will argue that, whatever their differences, these guys have more in common with one another than with the 99% of film directors (of every background) who have never been nominated?

I’ll have more to say about all this later, but for right now, I ask you:
Is it just a coincidence that year after year, the vast majority of candidates always look just like these six?
